The White House has now responded to a July 6 petition stating that the Obama administration "must declare Black Lives Matter a terror group - on the grounds of principle, integrity, morality, and safety."

(CNSNews.com) - It didn't take the White House long to respond to a July 6 petition asking the Obama administration to "formally recognize Black Lives Matter as a terrorist organization.

"The White House plays no role in designating domestic terror organizations," said last week's response to the 141,444 signers of the online petition.

"The U.S. government does not generate a list of domestic terror organizations, and therefore we are not able to address the formal request of your petition. We encourage you to engage with your community in the ongoing discussion of how we can better build trust and safety in our communities.

"Thank you for your participation in the We the People platform. We'll be back in touch soon," said the response signed by "The We the People Team."

The response noted that President Obama, following "tragic recent events" involving black men and police officers in Dallas, Minnesota, and Baton Rouge, is encouraging "frank conversations" about building trust and ensuring justice for all Americans.

The White House does not officially designate domestic terror organizations, but the U.S. Justice Department certainly keeps tabs on them.

In October 2015, Assistant Attorney General John Carlin gave a speech on domestic terrorism, noting at the time that "racial hatred motivates many of the violent extremist attacks." He also identified "an alarming new trend" of the Internet and social media linking "disaffected people" who are prone to violence.

In his 2015 speech, Carlin announced that the Justice Department had just appointed a new Domestic Terrorism Counsel (an attorney) to serve as a "main point of contact for U.S. Attorneys working on domestic terrorism matters."

He said the new position would coordinate domestic terrorism cases and "play a key role in our headquarters-level efforts to identify trends" in domestic terrorism.
